VideoGhost
The world's smallest frame-grabber
Familiar with the hardware keylogger concept? Why not take this to the next level and log entire screenshots instead of only keystrokes? That's precisely what this tiny hardware video-logger does: silently records screenshots and stores them as JPEGs to an internal 8GB flash disk.
Simply connect the video-logger to the computers DVI, VGA, or HDMI port, and it will automatically take a snapshot every few seconds. To view the recorded images, simply switch the device to flash drive mode, and it'll pop-up as a removable disk containing recorded JPEGs. This tiny patent-pending frame-grabber is the first of its kind available on the market!
The VideoGhost Pro and VideoGhost Max are enhanced versions with control capabilities over Virtual COM and hardware COM. An external application can capture still images on-demand from the monitored DVI, HDMI, or VGA interface. The VideoGhost Pro/Max can act as a Mass-Storage device, a Virtual COM, or even as a classic RS-232 serial device. An external push-button accelerates standard operations, such as screen capture or mode switching. The VideoGhost Pro/Max are highly customizable solutions, delivered with source-code examples easing the integration process into other systems.

How does it work?
The VideoGhost is an innovative tiny frame-grabber, hidden inside a standard video cable. It may capture the video signal of a computer or laptop. The built-in powerful FPGA chip and microprocessor enable it to convert the captured video signal to a JPEG image, and store it to the internal 2 Gigabyte flash drive. The VideoGhost is a purely electronic device, meaning it requires no software or drivers, and does not interfere with the standard video transmission to the monitor or TV. Getting the device running is very simple: just plug the video-logger in-between the video output socket and monitor or TV. Then connect the USB cable to a free USB socket (this is for powering the device only).
How do I view the recorded screenshots?
Retrieving screenshots is very similar to using a digital camera. Use the personal USB key, delivered with the device, and connect it to a computers USB port. The video-logger will pop-up as a removable drive, containing captured screenshots as JPEG files. The files will contain embedded time and date information.
Is this legal?
Technically speaking, you should contact a lawyer to get detailed information about the local laws, and the application for which you intend to use this device for. Generally it's permitted to monitor your own computer, meaning you can watch what your kids and family are doing on the computer. If you want to monitor your employees, or perform any other type of surveillance, you should display a clear notice about this fact. It is obviously NOT LEGAL to use this device for any type spying, or stealing confidential data.
USB Flash Drive mode (all VideoGhost devices)
Flash Drive mode is available just like in the standard VideoGhost. Recorded screenshots are stored in the JPEG format and may be accessed similarly to a digital camera. The video-logger will pop-up as a removable drive, containing captured screenshots as JPEG files. The files will contain embedded time and date information. Removable drive containing JPEG files
Virtual COM mode (Pro and MAX VideoGhost devices)
The VideoGhost Pro and VideoGhost Max both feature a USB Virtual COM interface, meaning they can be accessed by any PC-side software application. The Virtual COM interface offers the following functionality:
- - send commands to the VideoGhost Pro/Max
- - read, write, and store the VideoGhost Pro/Max configuration
- - capture and transfer an image on-demand from the DVI/HDMI/VGA interface
- - retrieve an archived JPEG image
Example software is delivered with C# source code, demonstrating all features of the VideoGhost Pro/Max.
Push button (Pro and MAX VideoGhost devices)
The VideoGhost Pro/Max features an external push-button, allowing performing a quick on-demand screenshot, and accelerating switching between Flash Drive mode and Virtual COM mode.
Hardware COM interface (MAX VideoGhost devices only)
A true hardware COM interface is available with the VideoGhost Max. It offers the same features as the Virtual COM (with exception to transferring entire images). This allows an external device to control the VideoGhost Max, for example using the RS-232 protocol. VideoGhost Pro/Max - Hardware COM interface
